Flamenco in Barcelona!

For those of you who are looking to experience both culture and entertainment, Barcelona will be happy to offer it to you today as the Flamenco Festival, “de Cajón” begins.  This festival runs from today until the 3^rd of April, therefore allowing you plenty of time to enjoy one of the shows.  This festival marks the fourth edition of the event, offering up to 17 different acts.  These acts will take place in a number of venues in the city and this year it will also extend to some villages just outside Barcelona, such as Sant Cugat and L’Hospitalet.

 

Flamenco is a famous Spanish dance, which also incorporates a very distinct form of singing.  It has its origins in Andalusia in the South of Spain and more specifically, has its roots with the Gypsy community there.  The passion and energy with which Flamenco is dance and sung is very impressive and usually has a profound impact on its audience.

Para aquellos que están buscando experimentar tanto cultura como entretenimiento, Barcelona inaugura hoy el festival de flamenco “de Cajón”.  Este festival se celebrará hasta el 3 de abril, por lo tanto, hay tiempo suficiente para disfrutar de cualquiera de los espectáculos del programa. Será la cuarta edición del evento, ofreciendo hasta 17 actuaciones distintas, que tendrán lugar en diversos recintos de la ciudad, y este año también se extenderá a poblaciones cercanas a Barcelona, como Sant Cugat y L’Hospitalet.

 

El Flamenco es un baile español muy conocido, que también incorpora una forma distinta de cantar. Tiene sus orígenes en Andalucía, en el sur de España y más específicamente, tiene sus raíces en la comunidad gitana de allí.  La pasión y la energía con la que se canta y baila el flamenco son muy impresionantes,  y suelen impactar mucho a su público.

La forma de les coses.

For those of you who are interested in the theatre, the production “La forma de les coses” (the shape of things) is currently running at the Teatre Lliure in Montjuic.  It has been running since the 17^th of December and finishes this weekend, on the 11^th of January.  This work was written by Neil Labute, an American film director, screenwriter and playwright.

 

This production narrates the story of Adam, a young and insecure boy whose world changes when he meets a girl called Evelyn.  Adam is ready to change everything in order to impress her and win her over.  However, this radical transformation fails to impress his friends. 

 

The four main characters of this comedy have received great reviews for their performance.  The well known actor Julio Manrique, directs for the second time as he presents this work.  The play has also received Butaca Prizes 2008 for the “Best Performance Small Format”, as well as “Best Direction”.  Further on this play, its times, tickets etc. can be found at Teatre Lliure.

Para los amantes del teatro, “La forma de les coses” está actualmente en cartel en el Teatre Lluire en Montjuic.  Empezó el 17 de diciembre y va a terminar este fin de semana, el 11 de enero.  La obra está escrita por Neil Labute, un director de cine, guionista y dramaturgo.

 

Esta producción narra la historia de Adam, un chico joven e inseguro que cambia totalmente cuando conoce a una chica que se llama Evelyn.  Este chico está dispuesto a cambiar para impresionarla y ganársela.  Sin embargo, esta transformación radical no impresiona mucho a sus amigos.

 

Los cuatros personajes principales han recibido unas críticas fantásticas por sus actuaciones. El muy conocido actor Julio Manrique, dirige una obra de teatro por segunda vez. La obra ha recibido el Premio Butaca 2008 a “El mejor espectáculo de pequeño formato” y también por “la mejor Dirección”. If you are looking for something cool and original to entertain the kids, then they are sure to love the “Sesame Street Show”, which began yesterday in the Teatro Tívoli.  The show, which runs until the 18^th of January, is one of the most anticipated of the year.

 

The story goes that when Grover loses his super powers, Sesame Street is left without a hero.  However, Big Bird, Bert, Elmo, Ernie and the rest of the team are determined to work together to help restore Grover with his super powers.  Through various songs and dances, the team at Sesame Street also teach you healthy habits with regard to exercise, hygiene and nutrition.

La historia cuenta que cuando Súper coco pierde sus poderes extraordinarios, el Barrio Sésamo se queda sin héroe.  Sin embargo, la Gallina Caponata, Blas, Elmo, Epi y el resto del equipo están dispuestos a trabajar juntos y ayudar a súper coco a recuperar sus poderes extraordinarios. A través de varias canciones y bailes el equipo en el Barrio Sésamo también les enseña hábitos saludables en relación al deporte, la higiene y la nutrición.

It’s New Year’s Eve!  One of the most celebrated nights of the year has finally arrived.  In Barcelona there will be many parties taking place throughout the city.  Nightclubs and bars come alive as locals and tourists alike come together to celebrate this special night.  As midnight approaches, many people head to Plaza Catalunya, with many also enjoying the traditional eating of grapes as the countdown begins.

  ¡Es Nochevieja!  Ha llegado una de las noches más celebradas del año.  En Barcelona habrá muchas fiestas por toda la ciudad.  Discotecas y bares se animarán tanto con los turistas como los de aquí para celebrar esta noche especial.  Mientras se acerca la medianoche, mucha gente se dirige a la Plaza Cataluña para comer las uvas tradicionales con las campanadas.

Cursa dels Nassos

 As New Year’s Eve approaches, Barcelona offers you something different in order to keep fit.  The famous marathon, “Cursa San Silvestre Barcelonesa- Cursa dels Nassos”, will take place in the city tomorrow evening from 17.30 onwards.  This marathon is 10km long and will pass through some of the main streets in Barcelona. This year is even more special as it celebrates the tenth edition of the race in the Catalonian Capital. 

 Currently over 3,500 people are registered for the race.  However, the organizers expect it to reach a maximum of 8,500 participants.  The closing date for registering for this event was last Saturday, the 27^th of December.  There will of course be prizes, with the first prize winning you the handsome sum of €1,000, as well as the trophy.   Further information on this fun and fit race can be found at Cursa dels Nassos.

 Mientras se acerca la Nochevieja, Barcelona le ofrece algo distinto para mantenerse en forma.  Mañana se celebrará en la ciudad la famosa maratón, la “Cursa San Silvestre Barcelonesa- Cursa dels Nassos”, a partir de las 17.30H. Tiene 10 Km. de recorrido, y pasará por algunas de las calles principales de Barcelona.  Este año es aún más especial porque celebra la 10ª edición de la carrera en la capital catalana.

 Actualmente hay 3.500 inscritos para esta carrera. Sin embargo, los organizadores esperan que logre alcanzar la cifra de 8.500 participantes. La última fecha para registrarse fue el pasado sábado 27 de diciembre. Festival de la infancia

For those of you who are trying to entertain your kids during the Christmas period, why not pop down to the “Children and Youth festival”, which is taking place in Montjuic (Fira de Barcelona) at the moment?  This event began on the 27^th of December and will run until the 4^th of January.  Last year proved to be a big hit with the kids and this year looks set to be even better.

 

This fair provides children with the opportunity to avail of recreational, sporting, educational and musical ideas with many exhibitors from these sectors, exhibiting here.  There will be shows such as the famous “Sesame Street”.  Children will also have the opportunity to go ice skating in the venue.  You can also have your photo taken here.  With the New Year in mind, children will also have the opportunity to hang their desires or wishes for 2009 on the tree.  There will also be workshops and handicrafts taking place which are sure to keep both the kids and other family members entertained.

Para aquellos que están intentando entretener a sus hijos durante el período festivo, ¿Por qué no visitar al “Festival de la Infancia” en la Fira de Barcelona?. Esta feria empezó el 27 de diciembre y se prolongará hasta el 4 de enero.  El año pasado resultó ser un éxito con los niños y este año seguramente será aun mejor.

 

Esta feria provee los niños con la oportunidad de aprovecharse de ideas recreativas, deportivas, educacionales y musicales, con muchos expositores de estos sectores, compartiendo su oferta.  También habrá espectáculos como el famoso “Barrio Sésamo”.  Además, los niños tendrán la oportunidad de ir patinando por el recinto.  También se puede comprar una foto de los pequeños patinando.  Pensando en el nuevo año, los niños también tendrán la oportunidad de colgar sus deseos para 2009 en el árbol.    También habrá talleres y artesanía, es decir, actividades para disfrutar con toda la familia.

In order to get you even more into the Christmas Spirit, why not visit something truly original?  The “Pesebres vivientes” are live cribs, containing real animals, people etc.  These are quite typical within Catalonia and there are many such cribs scattered throughout the province.  If you click on Pessebres Vivientes Cataluña you will be provided with a map of all the different locations where they are to be found. The dates and times on which they take place, often vary.  For example, some only take place over one day, such as the one in Sant Feliu Sasserra (Bages). 

 

However, others take place over a number of days or even over a period of weeks.  An example of this is the well-known Pesebre Viviente located in Corbera de Llobregat (located around 30km from Barcelona), which lasts roughly around five weeks.  In this “crib”, you will have the opportunity to walk through moss, forest and rivers, cliffs, as well as shepherds bonfires.

 

This “live crib” started on the 6^th of December 2008 and finishes on the 11^th of January.  The crib first started in Corbera in 1962.  It is developed in a circuit of 700 metres, and various important scenes are commemorated here such as the birth of Christ, the annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, as well as the arrival of the Shepherds, the Three Wise Men etc.

 

During this period, music is played, carols are sung and stories are narrated.  As the day of the “Reyes Magos” or “The Three Wise Men” approaches, children are invited to come with their letters, asking for what they want for “Los Reyes”.

Para sumergirse en el espíritu navideño, ¿Por qué no visitar algo verdaderamente original?  Los pesebres vivientes son muy tradicionales en Cataluña, ya que hay muchos pesebres repartidos por toda la provincia. Estos pesebres están representados por personas y animales reales. Si hace clic en Pesebres Vivientes Cataluña, encontrará un mapa con todas las ubicaciones distintas donde se pueden encontrar estos pesebres.  Muchas veces las fechas y los horarios en los cuales tienen lugar, son muy variados.  Por ejemplo, algunos sólo se representan durante un día, como el que está en Sant Feliu Sasserra (Bages).

 

Sin embargo, otros tienen lugar durante unos días o un período de semanas.  Un ejemplo es el muy conocido Pesebre Viviente de Corbera de Llobregat (ubicado a 30km de Barcelona), que dura unas cinco semanas. En este pesebre, tendrá la oportunidad de andar por musgo, bosques, ríos, acantilados y hogueras de pastores.

 

Este pesebre empezó el 6 de diciembre 2008 y termina el 11 de enero.  El pesebre en Corbera data del año 1962. Se desarrolla en un circuito de 700 metros, y se conmemoran varias escenas importantes, como por ejemplo el nacimiento de Cristo, la anunciación del Ángel Gabriel a la Virgen María, la llegada de los pastores y los Reyes Magos etc.

 

Durante la representación, se toca música, se cantan villancicos y se narran historias.  Cuando se acerca el día de Los Reyes Magos, los niños están invitados a traer sus cartas, pidiéndoles los regalos que quieren.

Christmas Traditions in Catalonia.

It’s almost Christmas and families are busy preparing their homes and Christmas Dinners.  For those of you who are curious to know about Spanish or Catalonian customs and what they traditionally eat, then this entry may interest you.

 

In Spain, families traditionally gather on the 24^th to have their Christmas dinner.  However, in Catalonia it is more traditional to celebrate Christmas Dinner on the 25^th.  The meal usually starts around midday.  One curiosity with regard to Christmas Dinner in Spain is that each autonomous community eat differently, with each having their own specialities.

 

In Catalonia the most typical Christmas Dinner consists of: “Escudella”, a hot soup of pasta and meat.  Following this, the famous “Carn d’olla” is eaten.  For those of you who are carnivores, this dish will prove to be a delight.  It consists of ham, the bone of ham, black and white sausage, a pig’s snout and ear, potatoes, onions, chickpeas, turnip, chorizo and cauliflower among other things.  The main course usually consists of Turkey, which is served with plums, pine nuts, onion and almonds.  For dessert, the famous turrones or neules are consumed. 

 

Turrones are very typical in Spain.  They are basically nougats, which more often than not, consist of almonds.  However, they can also be made with chocolate.  Neules are a Catalan speciality and are like cyndrical shaped biscuits.  The sweet wine liquor, Moscatel is also drunk with this meal.

 

The following day, St. Stephen’s Day is also celebrated in Catalonia, although it is not in the rest of Spain.  On this day, families usually gather for another big meal of “Canelones”, which is pasta filled with meat or usually, the leftovers of the Carn d’olla from the day before.

La Navidad casi ha llegado y las familias están ocupadas, preparando sus hogares para las fiestas y las cenas de navidad.  Para los que tienen curiosidad por conocer las costumbres en España y Cataluña y lo que se suele comer, esta entrada puede interesarles.

 

En España, las familias tradicionalmente se reúnen el 24 para la cena de Navidad.  Sin embargo, en Cataluña hay más tradición de celebrar la comida de Navidad el 25.  La comida suele empezar sobre el mediodía.  Una curiosidad con respecto a la cena de Navidad en España es que en cada comunidad autónoma se come distinto y cada una mantiene sus especialidades.

 

En Cataluña la cena más típica de la Navidad consiste en: “Escudella”, una sopa caliente de pasta (los tradicionales “galets”) y carne.  Después de esto se come la famosa “Carn d’olla”.  Para los amantes de la carne, este plato resultará ser un placer.  Consiste en jamón, el hueso del jamón, butifarra blanca y negra, el morro y la oreja del cerdo, patatas, cebollas, garbanzos, nabo, chorizo y coliflor entre otros ingredientes.  El plato principal suele consistir en el pavo, que se sirve con ciruelas, piñones, cebolla y almendras.  Para el postre, se suele consumir los famosos turrones o neules.

 

Los turrones son muy típicos en España.  Normalmente la almendra es el ingrediente principal. Sin embargo, también se puede hacer con chocolate.  Las neules son una especialidad de Cataluña que son como galletas en forma de cilindro.  También se bebe el licor dulce de vino, Moscatel, con la cena.

 

En Cataluña también se celebra el día siguiente, el día de San Esteban, aunque en el resto de España no se suele celebrar.  En este día, las familias se reúnen para otra gran comida, esta vez con “Canelones”, elaborados con pasta rellena de carne o típicamente, los restos de la Carn d’olla del día anterior.

International Gospel Festival.

If you haven’t already been to see the 10^h edition of Barcelona’s International Gospel Festival, then now is your final chance!  In recent years this festival has become a favourite among many, beginning in the year 2000, under the influence of the International Jazz Festival; it has proved to be a great success.

This year it runs from the 7^th until the 23^rd of December and will take place not only in the city of Barcelona, but also in the surrounding towns.  In Barcelona for example, the concerts will take place mainly in the impressive Palau de la Música.  This event is organised by “The Project”, which organises more than 300 productions and events each year.

 Si todavía no ha visto la 10ª edición del Festival Internacional de la música Gospel de Barcelona, ahora tiene su última oportunidad.  En los últimos años este festival se ha vuelto muy popular. Empezó en el año 2000, bajo la influencia del Festival Internacional de Jazz y ha demostrado ser un gran éxito.

Este año se celebra desde el 7 hasta el 23 de diciembre y tendrá lugar no sólo en la ciudad de Barcelona, sino también en otras ciudades.  En Barcelona por ejemplo, los conciertos tendrán lugar principalmente en el impresionante Palau de la Música.  Este evento está organizado por “The Project”, que organiza más que 300 producciones y eventos cada año.

For something truly Christmassy, why not take a trip to the ballet?  This famous Russian ballet takes place in the Parc Forum for two days only, today the 19^th and tomorrow the 20^th of December.  This ballet was composed by the famous Russian composer, Pytor llyich Tchaiksovsky between the years 1875-1876. It had its premiere in Moscow in 1877.

 

It is composed of three acts, telling the impossible love story of the Prince Siegfried and Odette.  It details the story of the Prince Siegfried who is reminded by his mother on his birthday that he must declare a wife at the ball, which has been organized for him on the following day.   As he cannot marry for love he becomes upset and escapes into a forest where he meets Princess Odette who has been turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.

 

Thus begins the quest to break the sorcerer’s curse as so that the two can marry.  This famous ballet has travelled around many cities, enchanting its audiences. Tickets for this show can be found at Servicaixa.

En estas fechas navideñas, ¿Por qué no ir al ballet? Este famoso ballet ruso se interpretará en el Parc Forum durante los días 19 y 20 de diciembre.  Este ballet fue compuesto por el famoso compositor ruso, Pytor llyich Tchaiksovsky entre los años 1875 y 1876.  Tuvo su estreno en 1877.

 

Está compuesto de tres actos que narran la imposible historia de amor del príncipe Sigfrido y Odette.  Nos cuenta la historia del Príncipe Sigfrido, al que su madre le recuerda, en su celebración de cumpleaños, que tiene que declararse a una mujer.  Dado que no se puede casar por amor, se pone triste y escapa al bosque donde se encuentra la princesa Odette, quien ha sido convertida en un cisne por la maldición de un brujo malo.

 

Así empieza la búsqueda para romper la maldición del brujo malo, para que los dos puedan casarse.  Este famoso ballet ha sido estrenado en muchas ciudades, encantando a todos los públicos.  Se puede encontrar entradas para este espectáculo en Servicaixa.
