Well it’s here!  Halloween has arrived!  This holiday is not celebrated to the same extent in Spain.  In Catalonia, the “Castañada”, traditionally celebrated on All Souls Day; is more centred on family coming together.  All Soul’s Day is one of the days on which the most flowers are sold, as many families visit the graves of their loved ones.  It is of such importance, that certain florists increase the prices of their flowers, which is something that their clients don’t like.

 

On this day, certain Catalan specialities are also consumed, for example, “castanyes” (chestnuts), “moniatos” (sweet potatoes), and “panellets” (small round marzipan cakes). “Moscatel” (sweet wine liquor) is also drunk on this day.

 

However if you are thinking more about the nightlife, fear not! You certainly won’t find any shortage of activities in Barcelona.

Nightclubs around the Catalonian capital will be full of people as they enjoy the festive atmosphere.  In certain clubs you will also have “fancy dress” nights for Halloween.

 

In Port Aventura, the well known amusement park outside Barcelona, you will also find a whole program of events, ranging from dinners, to hotel stays in a small and scary hotel to discovering their scary little village.

¡Ha llegado!  Me refiero a la Castañada. En Cataluña, el tradicional “Halloween” americano, se celebra de otra manera.  Esta Fiesta, que normalmente se celebra el día de Todos los Santos, está mucho más centrada en la familia. El día de todos los Santos es el día de todo el año en el que se vende las más flores, dado que mucha gente acude a los cementerios para visitar las sepulturas de sus seres queridos. Es de tanta importancia que algunos floristas suben los precios de sus flores durante este tiempo, algo que no gusta a sus clientes.

 

Normalmente la familia se junta para comer especialidades típicas de Cataluña como las “castanyes” (castañas), los “moniatos” (batatas) y los “panellets” (pastas dulces de mazapán y piñones).  En este día, también se bebe“Moscatel”, un licor dulce de vino.

 

Sin embargo, si está pensando más en la vida nocturna, ¡no se desespere!  No les faltarán  actividades en Barcelona.

Las discotecas en la capital de Cataluña estarán llenas de gente mientras disfruta el ambiente festivo.  En ciertas discotecas también habrá una fiesta de disfraces por Halloween.

 

En Port Aventura, el conocido parque de atracciones de Tarragona, encontrará un programa lleno de eventos, desde cenas hasta estancias en sus pequeños hoteles para “contactar con el miedo”.

Vegetarian in Barcelona?

A vegetarian in Barcelona?  You may have become accustomed to the usual “You’re a vegetarian?”, puzzled look which often appear on people’s faces.  This is usually followed by, “You mean you don’t eat jamón (ham) or chorizo?” or even worse is if you are a Vegan and don’t eat eggs; therefore leaving the beloved “tortilla” (omelette) out of reach.  God forbid!

 

However, fear not!  You won’t starve in Barcelona as there is quite a good variety of vegetarian restaurants, as well as a view Vegan ones to be found.  If you are looking for something fast and fresh, then “Juicy Jones” is a good bet in Barcelona.  It has two branches (one located in El Raval and the other in El Barrio Gótico) and offers a selection of delicious salads, rolls, soups, tapas, as well as a Daily Menu, which is very good value for money as you get three courses for roughly €9.

 

In El Raval there is also a well known vegetarian restaurant called “Organic”, which offers a buffet and salad bar.  With two branches, this restaurant can easily be found.

 

Another option if you are looking for something quick in the city is the restaurant “Maoz”, which does a great Falafel with pitta bread, which can be generously topped up at the buffet bar as many times as you like.

 

If you are looking for something more sophisticated and are dining in our restaurant, here at the Hotel Colón, our chefs will happily prepare meals for vegetarians, coeliacs or anyone who may have specific allergies.

¿Vegetariano en Barcelona?  Entonces puede ser que esté acostumbrado a la pregunta “¿eres un vegetariano?” con una mirada confundida en la cara de la gente.  Normalmente está seguida por, “¿Entonces no comes jamón ni chorizo?” o aun peor es si además no come huevos: Es incomprensible que no pruebe la imprescindible tortilla.  ¡Dios Santo!

 

Sin embargo, ¡no se preocupe!  No va a quedar con hambre en Barcelona, ya que se puede encontrar una variedad bastante buena de restaurantes vegetarianos, así como algunos restaurantes para los vegetarianos más estrictos, también llamados “Vegan”.  Si está buscando algo rápido y fresco, el restaurante “Juicy Jones” es una buena opción.  Tiene dos locales (uno que se encuentra en el Raval y el otro en el Barrio Gótico) y ofrecen una selección de ensaladas deliciosas, bocadillos, sopas, tapas, más un menú diario en que se puede disfrutar de tres platos por solo 9€.

 

En el Raval también hay otro restaurante vegetariano que se llama “Organic”, que ofrece un buffet y una barra de ensaladas. Al tener dos locales, se puede encontrar el sitio fácilmente.

 

Otra opción si está buscando algo rápido en la ciudad es el restaurante “Maoz”, que hace un buen falafel con pan de pita, el cual se puede rellenar desde la barra de ensaladas las veces que quiera.

“Retrospective” from Julio González in MNAC.

Today sees the opening of the exhibition “Retrospective” from Julio González in MNAC (the National Art Museum of Catalunya).  This famous Catalan sculptor was born in Barcelona and spent much time in the company of other well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso.  His work consists mostly of iron sculptures, with the majority focusing on the human figure. 

 

Various pieces of the artists work can be found in various museums in Spain and France, ranging from the “Museo Nacional Centro del arte de la Reina Sofia” in Madrid, to the “Centro Georges Pompidou” in Paris.  Although he died in 1940, this is the first exhibition dedicated to the artist here in his native Barcelona.  The exhibition will take place from the 28^th of October until the 2^nd of January 2009.

Hoy tiene lugar la inauguración de la exposición “Restrospectiva” de Julio González en el  MNAC (Museo Nacional del Arte de Cataluña).  Este famoso escultor catalán nació en Barcelona y pasó gran parte de su tiempo en la compañía de otros artistas conocidos como Pablo Picasso.  Su obra se basa sobre todo en las esculturas de hierro, casi todas sobre la figura humana.

 

Se puede encontrar varias piezas de la obra del artista en diversos museos en España y Francia, desde el Museo Nacional Centro del Arte de la Reina Sofía en Madrid hasta el Centro Georges Pompidou en París.  Aunque murió en el año 1940, esta es la primera exposición dedicada al artista aquí en su Barcelona natal.  La exposición tendrá lugar desde el 28 de octubre hasta el 2 de enero de 2009.

This week, cinema and music lovers will be in their element as you have the opportunity to enjoy the “In-Edit Beefeater festival”. This festival has grown surprisingly fast over the last four years and has since become an important date in many people’s diaries.

 

 This festival will take place in various locations in Barcelona, all of which are within walking distance from each other.  Enjoy documentaries on a wide variety of artists, ranging from Nina Simone, to the Dixie Chicks or the Beatles.  The festival started on the 23^rd of October and will run until the 2^nd of November.

Esta semana, los aficionados al cine y a la música estarán encantados, ya que tienen la oportunidad de disfrutar del festival “In-Edit Beefeater”. Este festival ha crecido muy rápidamente durante los últimos cuatro años y desde entonces se ha convertido en una fecha importante en las agendas de mucha gente.

 

El Festival tendrá lugar en varias salas de la ciudad, las cuales se encuentran a muy corta distancia. Se puede andar fácilmente de un cine al otro.  Disfruta de documentales sobre una variedad de artistas,  desde Nina Simone hasta  Dixie Chicks o los Beatles.  El festival empezó el 23.octubre y terminará el 2.noviembre.

Barcelona is a city steeped in history with beautiful buildings to be found throughout.  There are numerous neighbourhoods to be discovered and they are all easily accessible, either by foot, by metro, by bicycle, by bus or even by tram.

 

How about the following for spending a different Saturday in the city?

International Jazz Festival.

Kosmopolis 08′.

One of the great things about Barcelona is that you never get bored. There is always some small side street to be walked, some museum to be visited, some fabulous restaurant to be dined in, as well as a wide array of cultural activities that are always taking place.

This week is no exception, with the opening of the “Kosmpolis 08”, an International literary festival. This five day festival will take place principally in the CCCB, (the centre of contemporary culture in Barcelona). However, it will also take place in other locations.
