La forma de les coses.

For those of you who are interested in the theatre, the production “La forma de les coses” (the shape of things) is currently running at the Teatre Lliure in Montjuic.  It has been running since the 17^th of December and finishes this weekend, on the 11^th of January.  This work was written by Neil Labute, an American film director, screenwriter and playwright.

 

This production narrates the story of Adam, a young and insecure boy whose world changes when he meets a girl called Evelyn.  Adam is ready to change everything in order to impress her and win her over.  However, this radical transformation fails to impress his friends. 

 

The four main characters of this comedy have received great reviews for their performance.  The well known actor Julio Manrique, directs for the second time as he presents this work.  The play has also received Butaca Prizes 2008 for the “Best Performance Small Format”, as well as “Best Direction”.  Further on this play, its times, tickets etc. can be found at Teatre Lliure.

Para los amantes del teatro, “La forma de les coses” está actualmente en cartel en el Teatre Lluire en Montjuic.  Empezó el 17 de diciembre y va a terminar este fin de semana, el 11 de enero.  La obra está escrita por Neil Labute, un director de cine, guionista y dramaturgo.

 

Esta producción narra la historia de Adam, un chico joven e inseguro que cambia totalmente cuando conoce a una chica que se llama Evelyn.  Este chico está dispuesto a cambiar para impresionarla y ganársela.  Sin embargo, esta transformación radical no impresiona mucho a sus amigos.

 

Los cuatros personajes principales han recibido unas críticas fantásticas por sus actuaciones. El muy conocido actor Julio Manrique, dirige una obra de teatro por segunda vez. La obra ha recibido el Premio Butaca 2008 a “El mejor espectáculo de pequeño formato” y también por “la mejor Dirección”. If you are looking for something cool and original to entertain the kids, then they are sure to love the “Sesame Street Show”, which began yesterday in the Teatro Tívoli.  The show, which runs until the 18^th of January, is one of the most anticipated of the year.

 

The story goes that when Grover loses his super powers, Sesame Street is left without a hero.  However, Big Bird, Bert, Elmo, Ernie and the rest of the team are determined to work together to help restore Grover with his super powers.  Through various songs and dances, the team at Sesame Street also teach you healthy habits with regard to exercise, hygiene and nutrition.

Si está buscando algo divertido y original  para entretener a los niños, estarán encantados de ver el “Show de Barrio Sésamo”, que empezó ayer en el Teatro Tívoli.  El espectáculo, que tiene lugar hasta el 18 de enero, es uno de los más anticipados del año. 

 

La historia cuenta que cuando Súper coco pierde sus poderes extraordinarios, el Barrio Sésamo se queda sin héroe.  Sin embargo, la Gallina Caponata, Blas, Elmo, Epi y el resto del equipo están dispuestos a trabajar juntos y ayudar a súper coco a recuperar sus poderes extraordinarios. A través de varias canciones y bailes el equipo en el Barrio Sésamo también les enseña hábitos saludables en relación al deporte, la higiene y la nutrición.

Cursa dels Nassos

 As New Year’s Eve approaches, Barcelona offers you something different in order to keep fit.  The famous marathon, “Cursa San Silvestre Barcelonesa- Cursa dels Nassos”, will take place in the city tomorrow evening from 17.30 onwards.  This marathon is 10km long and will pass through some of the main streets in Barcelona. This year is even more special as it celebrates the tenth edition of the race in the Catalonian Capital. 

 Currently over 3,500 people are registered for the race.  However, the organizers expect it to reach a maximum of 8,500 participants.  The closing date for registering for this event was last Saturday, the 27^th of December.  There will of course be prizes, with the first prize winning you the handsome sum of €1,000, as well as the trophy.   Further information on this fun and fit race can be found at Cursa dels Nassos.

 

  

 Hotel Colón, 30 de diciembre 2008’.

 Mientras se acerca la Nochevieja, Barcelona le ofrece algo distinto para mantenerse en forma.  Mañana se celebrará en la ciudad la famosa maratón, la “Cursa San Silvestre Barcelonesa- Cursa dels Nassos”, a partir de las 17.30H. Tiene 10 Km. de recorrido, y pasará por algunas de las calles principales de Barcelona.  Este año es aún más especial porque celebra la 10ª edición de la carrera en la capital catalana.

 Actualmente hay 3.500 inscritos para esta carrera. Sin embargo, los organizadores esperan que logre alcanzar la cifra de 8.500 participantes. La última fecha para registrarse fue el pasado sábado 27 de diciembre. For something truly Christmassy, why not take a trip to the ballet?  This famous Russian ballet takes place in the Parc Forum for two days only, today the 19^th and tomorrow the 20^th of December.  This ballet was composed by the famous Russian composer, Pytor llyich Tchaiksovsky between the years 1875-1876. It had its premiere in Moscow in 1877.

 

It is composed of three acts, telling the impossible love story of the Prince Siegfried and Odette.  It details the story of the Prince Siegfried who is reminded by his mother on his birthday that he must declare a wife at the ball, which has been organized for him on the following day.   As he cannot marry for love he becomes upset and escapes into a forest where he meets Princess Odette who has been turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse.

 

Thus begins the quest to break the sorcerer’s curse as so that the two can marry.  This famous ballet has travelled around many cities, enchanting its audiences. Tickets for this show can be found at Servicaixa.

En estas fechas navideñas, ¿Por qué no ir al ballet? Este famoso ballet ruso se interpretará en el Parc Forum durante los días 19 y 20 de diciembre.  Este ballet fue compuesto por el famoso compositor ruso, Pytor llyich Tchaiksovsky entre los años 1875 y 1876.  Tuvo su estreno en 1877.

 

Está compuesto de tres actos que narran la imposible historia de amor del príncipe Sigfrido y Odette.  Nos cuenta la historia del Príncipe Sigfrido, al que su madre le recuerda, en su celebración de cumpleaños, que tiene que declararse a una mujer.  Dado que no se puede casar por amor, se pone triste y escapa al bosque donde se encuentra la princesa Odette, quien ha sido convertida en un cisne por la maldición de un brujo malo.

 

Así empieza la búsqueda para romper la maldición del brujo malo, para que los dos puedan casarse.  Este famoso ballet ha sido estrenado en muchas ciudades, encantando a todos los públicos.  Se puede encontrar entradas para este espectáculo en Servicaixa.

 

 

 

 

                                                                   

Barça versus Real Madrid.

If you are a football fan and more specifically, if you are a Barcelona supporter, then you will sure to be interested in the big match that is taking place this Saturday, the 13^th of December.  The game will take place in “Camp Nou”, the famous Barcelona Stadium, which was founded in 1957.   

 

Camp Nou is considered one of the biggest stadiums in Europe with a capacity of 98,934 spectators.  This Saturday sees the Barça team take on Real Madrid in the Spanish League.  This match should prove to be a very entertaining one, as these two great rivals come face to face in the Catalonian Capital. It should be even more interesting, given the fact that Barça will be playing on their home ground and that Real Madrid need to advance in the league. Kick-off will take place at 10pm.

Si usted es un fan del fútbol o más específicamente, si es un fan del Barça, seguramente estará interesado en el gran partido que tendrá lugar este sábado, el 13 de diciembre.  El partido se celebrará en el “Camp Nou”, el famoso estadio de Barcelona, que se fundó en el año 1957.

 

El Camp Nou está considerado como uno de los estadios más grandes de Europa, con una capacidad de 98.934 espectadores.  Este sábado el Barça se enfrentará al Real Madrid en la Liga Española.  Este partido, que enfrentará a los dos grandes rivales en la capital catalana, promete ser uno de los más interesantes. También lo será por el hecho de que el Barça juega en su casa, y el Real Madrid necesita avanzar en la liga. El partido empezará a las 22H.

La fira de Santa Llúcia.

The Christmas Spirit comes alive in Barcelona as you can now enjoy the various Christmas markets, which are taking place.  Fling open your bedroom window of the Hotel Colón, only to see a beautiful and lively Christmas market, “La fira de Santa Llúcia” taking place in the square below, just in front of the Cathedral.  This market began just last weekend on the 29^th of November and will take place until the 23^rd of December.

 

Many people visit this market each year, as the warm and cheery atmosphere entices people to the centre.  La fira de Santa Llúcia is hugely popular in Barcelona and dates back to 1786.  The climax of this event is usually on the 13^th of December as this is the day of the Patron Saint, Santa Llúcia.

 

The market is divided into three parts: the first part is known as the “green zone” as it principally sells Christmas trees, mistletoe, items for decorating the Christmas crib, decorations, and lights for the Christmas tree, plus more.  In the second part of the market, you can buy the figurines to put in the Christmas crib, such as Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the Three Wise Men etc.   You will also find stables and bridges.  The third and final part of the market sells more handmade products, candles etc.

 

In this market, you will also find the traditional ‘caga tío’, which is a typical Catalan tradition.  This is basically a big smiley faced log.  The kids usually beat or hit the log with a stick, making the log ‘drop’ presents such as dried fruits and ‘turrón’ (Spanish nougat). When the log is too tired to drop any more presents, he drops a ‘salt herring’, thus signifying that he has finished.

El espíritu de la Navidad cobra vida en Barcelona, especialmente con los mercados de Navidad que tienen lugar en la ciudad.  Abra de par en par su ventana del Hotel Colón para observar un bonito y vivo mercado, que está justo abajo en la plaza, enfrente de la Catedral.  Este mercado empezó el 29 de noviembre del fin de semana pasado y se celebrará hasta el 23 de diciembre.

 

Cada año, este mercado atrae a mucha gente con su ambiente cálido y alegre.  Este mercado se llama “La Fira de Santa Llúcia” y data del año 1786.  El punto culminante suele tiene lugar el 13 de diciembre porque éste es el día de la Patrona Santa Llúcia.

 

El Mercado está dividido en tres partes: la primera parte se conoce como la “zona verde” porque vende principalmente árboles de Navidad, ramos de muérdago, cosas para decorar el Belén, decoraciones y luces para el  árbol, más otras cosas.  En la segunda parte del mercado, puede comprar las figuras que se colocan en el Belén, como el niño Jesús, María y José, los Reyes Magos etc.  También encontrará establos y puentes.  La tercera parte del mercado vende más productos artesanales, velas etc.

 

En este Mercado, también se encuentra el tradicional ‘caga tío’, que es algo típico de Cataluña. Básicamente es un tronco grande y sonriente.  Los niños normalmente golpean el tronco con un palo, haciendo que el tronco ‘cague’ unos regalos, como frutos secos y turrón.  Cuando el ‘caga tío’ está demasiado cansado, caga un arenque para mostrar que ya ha terminado.

 

Una vez que haya terminado de pasear por el Mercado, ¿Por qué no disfrutar de un agradable almuerzo (o cena) en nuestro “Restaurante Catedral del Hotel Colón”? ¿o quizás un cappuccino caliente en nuestro bar mientras disfruta tranquilamente del ambiente navideño?

World AIDS Day 08′.

This evening, the well known artist, Miguel Bose takes to the stage in Barcelona as part of his world tour and also to support World AIDS Day.  People around the world today will be encouraged to buy a red ribbon in support of all of those suffering from AIDS.  Many people throughout the world suffer from AIDS and as a result, they are often discriminated against and unfairly treated by members of their community.

 

The aim of this day is to draw awareness to the treatment of those who suffer from these diseases, encouraging us to foster more support for them.  Miguel Bose is one of those trying to encourage this support as he plays a special Benefit concert in “El Palau de la Música”, right here in the city.  He is supporting the “Demos la cara por el SIDA” (Facing up to AIDS) campaign, which is initiated by the Fundació Lluita contra la SIDA, a non-profit organisation, which has as its objectives, healthcare, research and teaching in the field of HIV infection.

Esta tarde, el conocido artista, Miguel Bose sube al escenario en Barcelona como parte de su gira mundial, para dar apoyo al World AIDS Day (día mundial del SIDA).  Hoy, gente de todo el mundo se animará a comprar una cinta roja para dar apoyo al World AIDS Day, y a todos aquellos que sufren de la enfermedad, un gran número de personas en todo el mundo.

 

En muchos países, dichas personas están discriminadas y maltratadas por miembros de su comunidad. El objetivo de este día es llamar la atención acerca de este tema, animándonos a mostrar nuestro apoyo. Miguel Bosé muestra también su apoyo actuando en un concierto benéfico en el “Palau de la Música”,  en el centro de la ciudad.  Está apoyando la campaña “Demos la cara por el SIDA”, llevada a cabo por la Fundació Lluita contra la SIDA, una ONG que tiene como objetivo la asistencia, investigación y docencia en el campo de la infección del VIH.

Barcelona’s International Comedy Festival.

Many tourists and visitors to Barcelona will be interested to know that today marks the beginning of the International Comedy Festival of Barcelona.  This festival runs from today until the 30^th of November.  The festival will be given in 5 languages- Catalan, Spanish, Swedish, French and English in various venues in Barcelona.

 

One of the headlining acts is the much talked about, Danny Bhoy, a Scottish native, who, earlier this year, received rave reviews in Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival.  He can be seen in Teatreneu in the area of Gracia this Saturday, the 29^th of November.

 

Other acts will also take place over these dates, such as Larry Dixon (in Café Teatre Llantiol on Sunday, the 30^th of November).  Following the festival, there will also be an open mic, theatre night in “Belchica” (a bar that specializes in Belgian beer) on the 2^nd of December with free entry and a guaranteed laugh.

A muchos turistas y visitantes que estén en Barcelona les interesará saber que hoy empieza el Festival Internacional de Comedia de Barcelona.  El Festival se celebra desde hoy hasta el 30 de noviembre en 5 lenguas distintas- catalán, castellano, sueco, francés e inglés-, y en varias salas de Barcelona.

 

Uno de los intérpretes principales será Danny Bhoy, un nativo de Escocia (de quien la gente habla mucho), que recibió unas reseñas fantásticas en el Edinburgh Fringe Festival (un festival de arte en Edimburgo, Escocia) este año.  Estará en el Teatreneu en el barrio de Gracia este sábado 29 de noviembre.

 

Otros intérpretes también actuarán durante estas fechas, como Larry Dixon (en el Café Teatre Llantiol el domingo, el 30 de noviembre).  Después del festival, habrá una noche de “open mic” (una sesión en la que los miembros del público pueden subir y actuar en el escenario) y teatro en “Belchica” (un bar especializado en cerveza belga) con la entrada gratis y unas risas garantizadas.

Creativa Barcelona

Barcelona turns all creative today as a 3 day exhibition takes place over the weekend in “La Fira de Barcelona” near Montjuic.  This exhibition will be open from 10am until 8pm each day this weekend, finishing on Sunday. It is entitled, “Creativa Barcelona” (Creative Barcelona) and includes a number of workshops, which invite you to “imagine with your hands”. The workshops, which usually last just under two hours, will cover painting, patchwork, decoration, as well as jewellery making.

 

There will be stands from various and well-known shops in “creative activity”, where you will be able to purchase material so that you can continue your activity at home.  There will also be an exhibition on acclaimed artists who dedicate their lives to creating. The beauty of this event is that it is much more focused on the participation, rather than simply being a passer by.

Hoy Barcelona se vuelve creativa con la inauguración de una exposición de 3 días que se celebrará este fin de semana en La Fira de Barcelona, cerca de Montjuic.  Esta exposición estará abierta desde las 10 de la mañana hasta las 8 de la tarde, terminando el domingo.  Se llama “Creativa Barcelona” e incluye varios talleres, que le invitan a “imaginar con sus manos”.  Normalmente estos talleres duran como dos horas y consistirán en pintura, patchwork, decoración y abalorios.

 

Habrá puestos de varias tiendas conocidas, donde tendrán la oportunidad de comprar material para que puedan continuar con su actividad en casa.  También habrá una exposición de artistas consagrados que dedican su vida a la creación.  Lo mejor de este evento es que está enfocado a implicar a las personas en las actividades propuestas, más que en ser simples espectadores.
