In order to get you even more into the Christmas Spirit, why not visit something truly original?  The “Pesebres vivientes” are live cribs, containing real animals, people etc.  These are quite typical within Catalonia and there are many such cribs scattered throughout the province.  If you click on Pessebres Vivientes Cataluña you will be provided with a map of all the different locations where they are to be found. The dates and times on which they take place, often vary.  For example, some only take place over one day, such as the one in Sant Feliu Sasserra (Bages). 

 

However, others take place over a number of days or even over a period of weeks.  An example of this is the well-known Pesebre Viviente located in Corbera de Llobregat (located around 30km from Barcelona), which lasts roughly around five weeks.  In this “crib”, you will have the opportunity to walk through moss, forest and rivers, cliffs, as well as shepherds bonfires.

 

This “live crib” started on the 6^th of December 2008 and finishes on the 11^th of January.  The crib first started in Corbera in 1962.  It is developed in a circuit of 700 metres, and various important scenes are commemorated here such as the birth of Christ, the annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, as well as the arrival of the Shepherds, the Three Wise Men etc.

 

During this period, music is played, carols are sung and stories are narrated.  As the day of the “Reyes Magos” or “The Three Wise Men” approaches, children are invited to come with their letters, asking for what they want for “Los Reyes”.

Para sumergirse en el espíritu navideño, ¿Por qué no visitar algo verdaderamente original?  Los pesebres vivientes son muy tradicionales en Cataluña, ya que hay muchos pesebres repartidos por toda la provincia. Estos pesebres están representados por personas y animales reales. Si hace clic en Pesebres Vivientes Cataluña, encontrará un mapa con todas las ubicaciones distintas donde se pueden encontrar estos pesebres.  Muchas veces las fechas y los horarios en los cuales tienen lugar, son muy variados.  Por ejemplo, algunos sólo se representan durante un día, como el que está en Sant Feliu Sasserra (Bages).

 

Sin embargo, otros tienen lugar durante unos días o un período de semanas.  Un ejemplo es el muy conocido Pesebre Viviente de Corbera de Llobregat (ubicado a 30km de Barcelona), que dura unas cinco semanas. En este pesebre, tendrá la oportunidad de andar por musgo, bosques, ríos, acantilados y hogueras de pastores.

 

Este pesebre empezó el 6 de diciembre 2008 y termina el 11 de enero.  El pesebre en Corbera data del año 1962. Se desarrolla en un circuito de 700 metros, y se conmemoran varias escenas importantes, como por ejemplo el nacimiento de Cristo, la anunciación del Ángel Gabriel a la Virgen María, la llegada de los pastores y los Reyes Magos etc.

 

Durante la representación, se toca música, se cantan villancicos y se narran historias.  Cuando se acerca el día de Los Reyes Magos, los niños están invitados a traer sus cartas, pidiéndoles los regalos que quieren.

Christmas Traditions in Catalonia.

It’s almost Christmas and families are busy preparing their homes and Christmas Dinners.  For those of you who are curious to know about Spanish or Catalonian customs and what they traditionally eat, then this entry may interest you.

 

In Spain, families traditionally gather on the 24^th to have their Christmas dinner.  However, in Catalonia it is more traditional to celebrate Christmas Dinner on the 25^th.  The meal usually starts around midday.  One curiosity with regard to Christmas Dinner in Spain is that each autonomous community eat differently, with each having their own specialities.

 

In Catalonia the most typical Christmas Dinner consists of: “Escudella”, a hot soup of pasta and meat.  Following this, the famous “Carn d’olla” is eaten.  For those of you who are carnivores, this dish will prove to be a delight.  It consists of ham, the bone of ham, black and white sausage, a pig’s snout and ear, potatoes, onions, chickpeas, turnip, chorizo and cauliflower among other things.  The main course usually consists of Turkey, which is served with plums, pine nuts, onion and almonds.  For dessert, the famous turrones or neules are consumed. 

 

Turrones are very typical in Spain.  They are basically nougats, which more often than not, consist of almonds.  However, they can also be made with chocolate.  Neules are a Catalan speciality and are like cyndrical shaped biscuits.  The sweet wine liquor, Moscatel is also drunk with this meal.

 

The following day, St. Stephen’s Day is also celebrated in Catalonia, although it is not in the rest of Spain.  On this day, families usually gather for another big meal of “Canelones”, which is pasta filled with meat or usually, the leftovers of the Carn d’olla from the day before.

La Navidad casi ha llegado y las familias están ocupadas, preparando sus hogares para las fiestas y las cenas de navidad.  Para los que tienen curiosidad por conocer las costumbres en España y Cataluña y lo que se suele comer, esta entrada puede interesarles.

 

En España, las familias tradicionalmente se reúnen el 24 para la cena de Navidad.  Sin embargo, en Cataluña hay más tradición de celebrar la comida de Navidad el 25.  La comida suele empezar sobre el mediodía.  Una curiosidad con respecto a la cena de Navidad en España es que en cada comunidad autónoma se come distinto y cada una mantiene sus especialidades.

 

En Cataluña la cena más típica de la Navidad consiste en: “Escudella”, una sopa caliente de pasta (los tradicionales “galets”) y carne.  Después de esto se come la famosa “Carn d’olla”.  Para los amantes de la carne, este plato resultará ser un placer.  Consiste en jamón, el hueso del jamón, butifarra blanca y negra, el morro y la oreja del cerdo, patatas, cebollas, garbanzos, nabo, chorizo y coliflor entre otros ingredientes.  El plato principal suele consistir en el pavo, que se sirve con ciruelas, piñones, cebolla y almendras.  Para el postre, se suele consumir los famosos turrones o neules.

 

Los turrones son muy típicos en España.  Normalmente la almendra es el ingrediente principal. Sin embargo, también se puede hacer con chocolate.  Las neules son una especialidad de Cataluña que son como galletas en forma de cilindro.  También se bebe el licor dulce de vino, Moscatel, con la cena.

 

En Cataluña también se celebra el día siguiente, el día de San Esteban, aunque en el resto de España no se suele celebrar.  En este día, las familias se reúnen para otra gran comida, esta vez con “Canelones”, elaborados con pasta rellena de carne o típicamente, los restos de la Carn d’olla del día anterior.
