If you are interested in attending an exhibition right in the centre of Barcelona, then you can’t go wrong with the Palau de la Virreina on Las Ramblas.  Amongst others, an interesting exhibition which is currently taking place is “Working Documents”.  This exhibition sees the collaboration of a number of artists from various countries.

 

It started on the 19^th of November and will run until the 8^th of February 2009.  It is “an exhibition that explores film and video artistic practices that use documentary performance and interventionist strategies for social critique”.

 

Image documents are seen as a new and open way of reading social contexts.  Various themes which will be touched upon during this exhibition are: gender politics, translation meditation, performance as symbolic geography, as well as the collaborative construction of images.  This exhibition has proven to be quite successful as it is audiovisual instead of being simply visual.  Further information on the opening times of this exhibition can be found by clicking on the link above.

Si está interesado en asistir a una exposición directamente en el centro de Barcelona, el museo del Palau de la Virreina puede ser una buena opción.  Entre otras, actualmente tiene lugar una exposición muy interesante que se llama: “Working Documents”, en la que han colaborado diversos artistas de varios países.

 

La exposición empezó el 19 de noviembre y se celebrará hasta el 8 de febrero 2009.  Es “una exposición que explora películas y las prácticas artísticas de video que usa la representación de documentales y estratégicas de la intervención de la crítica social”. 

 

Se utilizan imágenes documentales como una vía nueva y abierta de leer los contextos sociales.  Algunos temas de los cuales se hablará durante esta exposición son: la política de género, la meditación de traducción, la representación como una geografía figurativa, así como la construcción colaborativa de  imágenes.  Esta exposición ha demostrado ser bastante exitosa, porque es audiovisual en lugar de simplemente visual. Being a child in Burundi.

A striking exhibition is currently running in the Palau Robert, entitled “Being a child in Burundi”.  This exhibition began on the 20^th of November and runs until the 11^th of January.  It examines the difficult situation facing the children of Burundi.  It is comprised of 40 photos, which portray the children in different situations such as going to school under unstable conditions, working in order to improve the economic situation of their families, as well as documenting those who are on the streets of Burundi. 

 

These photographs were taken in 2006 by Joan Simó, a journalist who dedicated his trip to Africa in taking pictures of these children.  Further information of the location and times of this exhibition can be found by clicking on the link above.

Actualmente se está celebrando una exposición impactante en el Palau Robert, llamada “Niños en Burundi”.  Esta exposición empezó el 20 de noviembre y se celebrará hasta el 11 de enero.  Examina la difícil situación a que se enfrentan los niños de Burundi.  Consta de 40 fotos, que retratan a los niños en situaciones difíciles, como yendo a la escuela en condiciones peligrosas, o trabajando para mejorar la situación económica de sus familias.  También se muestra a los niños que viven en las calles de Burundi.

Sticker Contest BCN 08′.

Looking to participate or even observe something completely original and different?  Then today you should make your way down to the shopping centre, Maremagnum, located in Port Vell in the centre of Barcelona.  Today sees the beginning of a “Sticker Contest BCN”, where participants are invited to design unique, giant stickers.  This year the theme for the contest will be “Christmas”.  The participants will have the opportunity to display their stickers in various places around Maremagnum.  This is the second edition of the event and is sure to entice many as the first prize is the handsome sum of 1,500 euros.

¿Quiere participar o simplemente observar algo totalmente original y diferente?  Entonces hoy debería ir al centro comercial, Maremagnum, ubicado en Port Vell en el centro de Barcelona.  Hoy se inaugura el  “Sticker Contest BCN 08”, donde los participantes están invitados a diseñar adhesivos grandes y únicos.  Este año el tema será “Navidad”.  Los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de exponer sus adhesivos en varios sitios en el Maremagnum. Esta es la segunda edición de este evento y seguramente atraerá a muchos, porque tiene un premio de 1,500 Euros.

World Press Photo 08′.

Today sees the beginning of an impacting and important exhibition as the “World Press Photo 2008” takes place.  This exhibition will run in the CCCB in Barcelona.  It is an exhibition in International professional photo journalism.  This renowned exhibition is an annual event and tours around 80 different cities in 40 countries worldwide.  This event is organized by the Photographic Social Vision Foundation in collaboration with the CCCB and the “Caja Mediterráneo”.

 

Various categories are covered under this title, such as news events, current affairs, sports, daily life etc.  These powerful photos speak louder than words as people across the globe are often touched by these images, often offering a glimpse of the unfortunate reality of the lives of many people. The Barcelona leg of this tour will run from today, the 18^th of November until the 14^th of December.

Hoy marca la inauguración de una exposición importante e impresionante: el “World Press Photo 2008”.  Esta exposición tendrá lugar en el CCCB en Barcelona.  Es una “muestra internacional de fotoperiodismo profesional”.  Esta exhibición de renombre es un evento anual que se celebra periódicamente en 80 ciudades distintas de 40 países de todo el mundo.  El evento está organizado por la Fundación “Photographic Social Vision” con la colaboración del CCCB y de la Caja Mediterráneo. 

 

Cuenta con varias categorías, como noticias de actualidad, deporte, temas de actualidad, vida diaria etc.  Estas fotos son muy impactantes, porque ofrecen un vistazo de la dura realidad de la vida de muchas personas.  La gira en Barcelona tendrá lugar desde hoy hasta el 14 de diciembre.

Africa: a glance from the West.

If you haven’t already been to see the exhibition, “Africa: a glance from the West”, then perhaps you should make a note in your diary as this Sunday, the 9^th of November sees the end of the exhibition.  This exhibition forms part of a series on Africa and is taking place in the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia (MAC).  It comes highly recommended as it provides a kaleidoscopic view of the African continent from various perspectives. 

 

This exhibition is offered from the point of view of certain Europeans who are involved either personally or professionally in Africa, such as history teachers, photographers etc.  It is well worth a visit as it has recently received very positive reviews.

 

Additionally, under this series on Africa, there will also be another one taking place in the Ethnological Museum of Barcelona (MEC).  Here you can enjoy “Travel to the other shore”.  This exhibition consists of pieces from everyday life, which have been specifically included for this exhibition.  The second part consists of a more “academic” vision, with explanations regarding the evolution of their history.  This exhibition runs until the 30^th of April 2009.

Si todavía no ha visto la exposición de “África: la mirada del Occidente”, quizás deba tomar nota en su agenda porque se va a acabar este Domingo, el 9 de noviembre.  Esta exposición forma parte de la serie sobre África y tiene lugar en el MAC (el Museo de Arqueología  de Cataluña).  Se recomienda mucho porque ofrece una vista caleidoscópica del continente africano desde varias perspectivas.

 

Esta exposición está enfocada desde el punto de vista de europeos que están involucrados personalmente o profesionalmente en África, como profesores de historia, fotógrafos etc.  Vale la pena visitar la exposición porque últimamente ha recibido muchas reseñas positivas en la prensa. 

 

Además, bajo de esta serie sobre África, también habrá otra exposición en el MEC (Museo Etnológico de Barcelona).  Aquí se puede disfrutar de “El viaje a la otra orilla”.  Esta exposición consiste en piezas de la vida cotidiana, que se han traído específicamente para la exposición.  La segunda parte consta de una visión un poco más “académica”, con explicaciones acerca de la evolución de su historia.  Esta exposición se celebrará hasta el 30 de abril 2009.

“IN THE CHINESE CITY. Overview of an empire’s mutations”.

Today marks the beginning of an interesting exhibition in the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona).   The exhibition is entitled: “IN THE CHINESE CITY. Overview of an empire’s mutations”.  This exhibition documents the transformation in China’s landscape through great construction and changes that have taken place in recent years.  As part of this exhibition, various materials will be used, such as archaeological documents, works of art, archive images etc. Some of the topics covered will be, Feng Shui, Gardens and construction/destruction.  The exhibition will take place from today, the 4^th of November until the 22^nd February 2009.

 

Following on from this exhibition, you will also have the opportunity to take part in various debates about China during the month of November.  There will be various debate themes such as, “Between Euphoria and Desolation. Architecture and Urban Planning in China Today”.

Hoy es la inauguración de una exhibición muy interesante en el CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona).  La exhibición se llama “En la ciudad China.  Miradas sobre las transformaciones de un imperio”.   Esta exhibición  documenta la transformación y los grandes  cambios que ha experimentado el territorio chino durante los últimos años.  Como parte de esta exhibición, se usan varios materiales como documentos arqueológicos, obras de arte, imágenes de archivo etc.  Algunos de los temas explorados serán el Feng Shui, los jardines y la construcción/destrucción.  La exhibición se celebrará del 4 de noviembre al 22 de febrero 2009.

 

Mientras dure la exhibición, habrá también la oportunidad de tomar parte en varias discusiones sobre China.  Habrá varios temas a discutir como, “Entre euforia y desolación.   La planificación arquitectónica y urbana en China hoy”.

“Retrospective” from Julio González in MNAC.

Today sees the opening of the exhibition “Retrospective” from Julio González in MNAC (the National Art Museum of Catalunya).  This famous Catalan sculptor was born in Barcelona and spent much time in the company of other well-known artists such as Pablo Picasso.  His work consists mostly of iron sculptures, with the majority focusing on the human figure. 

 

Various pieces of the artists work can be found in various museums in Spain and France, ranging from the “Museo Nacional Centro del arte de la Reina Sofia” in Madrid, to the “Centro Georges Pompidou” in Paris.  Although he died in 1940, this is the first exhibition dedicated to the artist here in his native Barcelona.  The exhibition will take place from the 28^th of October until the 2^nd of January 2009.

Hoy tiene lugar la inauguración de la exposición “Restrospectiva” de Julio González en el  MNAC (Museo Nacional del Arte de Cataluña).  Este famoso escultor catalán nació en Barcelona y pasó gran parte de su tiempo en la compañía de otros artistas conocidos como Pablo Picasso.  Su obra se basa sobre todo en las esculturas de hierro, casi todas sobre la figura humana.

 

Se puede encontrar varias piezas de la obra del artista en diversos museos en España y Francia, desde el Museo Nacional Centro del Arte de la Reina Sofía en Madrid hasta el Centro Georges Pompidou en París.  Aunque murió en el año 1940, esta es la primera exposición dedicada al artista aquí en su Barcelona natal.  La exposición tendrá lugar desde el 28 de octubre hasta el 2 de enero de 2009.
