Flamenco in Barcelona!

For those of you who are looking to experience both culture and entertainment, Barcelona will be happy to offer it to you today as the Flamenco Festival, “de Cajón” begins.  This festival runs from today until the 3^rd of April, therefore allowing you plenty of time to enjoy one of the shows.  This festival marks the fourth edition of the event, offering up to 17 different acts.  These acts will take place in a number of venues in the city and this year it will also extend to some villages just outside Barcelona, such as Sant Cugat and L’Hospitalet.

 

Flamenco is a famous Spanish dance, which also incorporates a very distinct form of singing.  It has its origins in Andalusia in the South of Spain and more specifically, has its roots with the Gypsy community there.  The passion and energy with which Flamenco is dance and sung is very impressive and usually has a profound impact on its audience.

Para aquellos que están buscando experimentar tanto cultura como entretenimiento, Barcelona inaugura hoy el festival de flamenco “de Cajón”.  Este festival se celebrará hasta el 3 de abril, por lo tanto, hay tiempo suficiente para disfrutar de cualquiera de los espectáculos del programa. Será la cuarta edición del evento, ofreciendo hasta 17 actuaciones distintas, que tendrán lugar en diversos recintos de la ciudad, y este año también se extenderá a poblaciones cercanas a Barcelona, como Sant Cugat y L’Hospitalet.

 

El Flamenco es un baile español muy conocido, que también incorpora una forma distinta de cantar. Tiene sus orígenes en Andalucía, en el sur de España y más específicamente, tiene sus raíces en la comunidad gitana de allí.  La pasión y la energía con la que se canta y baila el flamenco son muy impresionantes,  y suelen impactar mucho a su público.

Festival de la infancia

For those of you who are trying to entertain your kids during the Christmas period, why not pop down to the “Children and Youth festival”, which is taking place in Montjuic (Fira de Barcelona) at the moment?  This event began on the 27^th of December and will run until the 4^th of January.  Last year proved to be a big hit with the kids and this year looks set to be even better.

 

This fair provides children with the opportunity to avail of recreational, sporting, educational and musical ideas with many exhibitors from these sectors, exhibiting here.  There will be shows such as the famous “Sesame Street”.  Children will also have the opportunity to go ice skating in the venue.  You can also have your photo taken here.  With the New Year in mind, children will also have the opportunity to hang their desires or wishes for 2009 on the tree.  There will also be workshops and handicrafts taking place which are sure to keep both the kids and other family members entertained.

Para aquellos que están intentando entretener a sus hijos durante el período festivo, ¿Por qué no visitar al “Festival de la Infancia” en la Fira de Barcelona?. Esta feria empezó el 27 de diciembre y se prolongará hasta el 4 de enero.  El año pasado resultó ser un éxito con los niños y este año seguramente será aun mejor.

 

Esta feria provee los niños con la oportunidad de aprovecharse de ideas recreativas, deportivas, educacionales y musicales, con muchos expositores de estos sectores, compartiendo su oferta.  También habrá espectáculos como el famoso “Barrio Sésamo”.  Además, los niños tendrán la oportunidad de ir patinando por el recinto.  También se puede comprar una foto de los pequeños patinando.  Pensando en el nuevo año, los niños también tendrán la oportunidad de colgar sus deseos para 2009 en el árbol.    También habrá talleres y artesanía, es decir, actividades para disfrutar con toda la familia.

International Gospel Festival.

If you haven’t already been to see the 10^h edition of Barcelona’s International Gospel Festival, then now is your final chance!  In recent years this festival has become a favourite among many, beginning in the year 2000, under the influence of the International Jazz Festival; it has proved to be a great success.

This year it runs from the 7^th until the 23^rd of December and will take place not only in the city of Barcelona, but also in the surrounding towns.  In Barcelona for example, the concerts will take place mainly in the impressive Palau de la Música.  This event is organised by “The Project”, which organises more than 300 productions and events each year.

 Si todavía no ha visto la 10ª edición del Festival Internacional de la música Gospel de Barcelona, ahora tiene su última oportunidad.  En los últimos años este festival se ha vuelto muy popular. Empezó en el año 2000, bajo la influencia del Festival Internacional de Jazz y ha demostrado ser un gran éxito.

Este año se celebra desde el 7 hasta el 23 de diciembre y tendrá lugar no sólo en la ciudad de Barcelona, sino también en otras ciudades.  En Barcelona por ejemplo, los conciertos tendrán lugar principalmente en el impresionante Palau de la Música.  Este evento está organizado por “The Project”, que organiza más que 300 producciones y eventos cada año.

Korean Film Festival.

If you are interested in Asian Culture, then today is your lucky day as the Korean Film Festival kicks off in Barcelona.  This festival will take place in two different locations: in the Cines Méliès located in the street Villaroel and in Casa Asia.  The “official section” will take place in the Cines Méliès with 5 titles in 35mm.  There will be a range of documentaries and short films to be seen.   One of the most well known films is “Forever the Moment”, which is based on a true story about a young handball player, competing in the Olympics.  This is especially significant, given the fact that the most recent Olympic Games were held in Pekín.

Si está interesado en la cultura asiática, hoy empieza el Festival Coreano del Cine en Barcelona.  Este festival tendrá lugar en dos locales distintos: en los Cines Méliès, que están ubicados en la Calle Villaroel, y en la Casa Asia. Se celebrará la “sección oficial” en los Cines Méliès con 5 títulos en 35mm.  Habrá una variedad de documentales y cortometrajes para ver.  Una de las películas mejor conocidas es “Forever the Moment”, que está basada en una historia real sobre un joven jugador de balonmano que está compitiendo en los Juegos Olímpicos.  Esto es especialmente importante porque los últimos Juegos Olímpicos tuvieron lugar en Pekín.

Brazilian Film Festival.

Today marks the beginning of the third Brazilian Film Festival to be held in Barcelona.  This film festival takes place in many cities across the world, such as Buenos Aires, Madrid, Miami and Vancouver.  The festival runs from today, the 11^th of December until the 18^th of December in the cinema, “Verdi Park” in the area of Gracia in Barcelona. 

 

This festival will exhibit the very best in Brazilian film and production, offering a range of films and documentaries.  Some of these films have received very prestigious awards such as the film “Tropa de Elite”, which won the Golden Bear award in the International film festival in Berlin this year.  The film “Estómago”, also won the Golden Spike award for the best film in the International film festival in Valladolid.

 

The documentaries have been produced in some of the most diverse countries in Latin American culture.  One of the objectives in showing such documentaries is to promote their production and circulation in order to spread the cultural production of the Latin American villages in the world market.

 

Another aim of the festival is to promote and spread the awareness of Brazilian culture in Spain and especially in Barcelona.  It also hopes to strengthen the economic and cultural exchange between the two countries, as well as creating more business opportunities between the two markets.

Hoy empieza el tercer festival del cine brasileño que tiene lugar en Barcelona.  Este festival de cine se celebrará en muchas ciudades en todo el mundo como Buenos Aires, Madrid, Miami y Vancouver.  El festival estará en cartel desde hoy hasta el 18 de diciembre en el cine, “Verdi Park” en el barrio de Gracia en Barcelona.

 

Este festival exhibirá lo mejor de la producción del cine brasileño, ofreciendo una gran  variedad de películas y documentales.  Algunas de estas películas han recibido premios prestigiosos como la película, “Tropa de Elite”, que ganó el premio del Oso de Oro en el  festival internacional de cine en Berlín este año.  La película “Estómago” también ganó la Espiga de Oro en el festival internacional del cine de Valladolid.

 

Los documentales han sido producidos en los más diversos países de la cultura iberoamericana.  Uno de los objetivos de estrenar tales documentales, es el de promocionar su producción y circulación para extender el legado cultural de los pueblos de Ibero América en el mercado mundial.

 

Otro objetivo del festival es el de promocionar y extender la conciencia de la cultura brasileña en España, y especialmente en Barcelona.  También espera fortalecer el intercambio económico y cultural entre los dos países, además de crear más oportunidades de negocio entre los dos mercados.

Music fans will be in their alley as Barcelona welcomes the music festival “Primavera Club”, starting today the 10th of December and running until the 13th of December.  This festival will be run simultaneously to its sister festival of the same name in Madrid.  The venues for this festival will be the Forum and Sala Apolo.  The Forum is a triangular based building, which was designed by Swiss Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron and which was considered emblematic for the Universal Forum of Cultures which took place in 2004.  Sala Apolo is one of the most well known concert venues in Barcelona, as well as serving as a club.

 

Primavera Club will see a number of acts take to the stage over the three days, such as “Boss Hog”, “La Buena Vida” and “Mogwai DJ’s”.  The event will be supported by Estrella Damm Beer and Time Out Barcelona among others.  Further information on concert locations, times and prices of tickets can be found at Primavera Club.

Hoy los fans de la música estarán encantados porque Barcelona da la bienvenida al festival de música “Primavera Club”, que empieza hoy y tendrá lugar hasta el 13 de diciembre.   Este festival se celebrará simultáneamente con el festival del mismo nombre que tiene lugar en Madrid.  Los recintos en los que se celebrarán estos conciertos serán el Forum y la Sala Apolo.  El Forum es un edificio que tiene una base triangular y que fue diseñado por los arquitectos suizos Jacques Herzog y Pierre de Meuron. Estaba considerado como emblemático por el Forum Universal de Culturas que se celebró en el 2004.  La Sala Apolo es uno de los recintos de conciertos y una de las discotecas más conocidas en Barcelona.

BAC International Festival.

For those of you wishing to join in with more rebellious voices, perhaps you should go along and see the BAC International Festival of Contemporary Art which begins today.  This festival runs in the CCCB until the 28^th of December.  The title for this festival is “Réveille toi”, literally meaning “Wake Up!”. More than 200 artists from all over the world, as well as 30 galleries will participate in this event. 

 

This festival forces the viewer to reflect on themes such as consumption, fashion, advertising and their consequences in our society.  It aims to enable people to reflect on these elements, which have such a profound effect on us, shaping us as people and encouraging us to focus solely on the aesthetic, without paying proper attention to what fulfils us as human beings.

 

Therefore this exhibition allows people’s voices to be heard as they rebel against that which is fed to us through the media. Para aquellos que desean unirse a las voces más rebeldes, quizás deberían visitar el BAC Internacional Festival de Arte Contemporánea que empieza hoy.  Este festival se celebrará en el CCCB hasta el 28 de diciembre.  El título del festival es “Réveille toi”, que significa literalmente “¡Despiértate!”.  Más de 200 artistas de todo el mundo y 30 galerías también participarán en este evento.

 

Este festival obliga al espectador a reflexionar sobre temas como el consumo, la moda, la publicidad y sus consecuencias en nuestra sociedad.  Tiene el objetivo de permitir a la gente meditar sobre estos elementos, que tienen un efecto profundo en nosotros, formándonos como personas y animándonos a centrarse exclusivamente en lo estético, sin prestar atención a lo que nos llena como seres humanos.

Today marks the beginning of the “International Magic Festival” in Barcelona.  This festival will take place over the weekend, finishing on Sunday the 30^th of November.  It will take place in “La Fira de Barcelona”, located near Plaza España. 

 

This festival offers the public, the latest in the areas of esoterism, parascience and paranormalism among others.  The program includes various talks and workshops and will be given by professionals in these areas. It will be divided into three parts: cultural activities, interactive activities and commercial activities.

 

In the “interactive activities”, members of the public will have the opportunity to enter, live and experiment how “other worlds” are.  You will also have the opportunity to buy a number of products, such as books, videos etc. about these themes. Visitors to this event will also be pleased to know that many of the workshops and talks are free.

Hoy empieza el Festival Internacional de Magia en Barcelona. Este festival se celebra durante el fin de semana, terminando el domingo 30 de noviembre.  Tendrá lugar en “La Fira de Barcelona”, ubicado cerca de la Plaza España.

 

Este festival ofrece al público lo último en los campos del esoterismo, la paraciencia y el “más allá”.  El programa incluye varias conferencias y talleres que serán impartidos por profesionales en estos campos.  Estará divido en tres partes: actividades culturales, interactivas y comerciales.

 

En las “actividades interactivas”, miembros del público tendrán la oportunidad de entrar, vivir y experimentar como son los “otros mundos”.  También habrá la oportunidad de comprar productos como libros, videos etc. que tratan de estos temas.  Los visitantes a este evento estarán contentos de saber que muchas de las conferencias y talleres son gratis.

Independent Film Festival in Barcelona.

Today marks the beginning of the 15th edition of Barcelona’s Independent Film Festival. This festival, which runs from today until the 22^nd of November, offers films ranging from shorts, feature films, documentaries as well as animated films.  You will have the opportunity to enjoy films from a wide range of countries such as Mexico, Iran, Israel as well as a great number of European countries. 

 

This festival provides the perfect chance to meet people from all over the world, as well as opening your mind to other cultures as the films that you will see are not your everyday, ‘commercial’ films, rather they are considered to be more ‘alternative’.  Various workshops and round table discussions will also be offered where directors, filmmakers and audience members can meet and share their ideas and thoughts regarding the different films.

 

This festival will take place in various locations in Barcelona such as the CCCB (the centre of contemporary culture of Barcelona), the MACBA (the museum for contemporary art), the French Institute as well as other spaces.

Hoy marca el principio de la 15 edición del cine independiente de Barcelona.  Este festival, se celebrará desde hoy hasta el 22 de noviembre, ofreciendo varios tipos de pases, como cortometrajes, películas, documentales y dibujos animados. También habrá la oportunidad de disfrutar de una variedad de películas de países como México, Irán, Israel y también varios países de Europa.

 

Este festival ofrece la oportunidad perfecta de conocer a gente de todo el mundo, así como de abrir tu mente a otras culturas. No se verán las películas típicas y comerciales que normalmente se estrenan, sino que son películas más “alternativas”.  También habrá varios talleres y espacios donde se puede conversar y compartir ideas y pensamientos de las distintas películas.

 

Este festival tendrá lugar en varios sitios de Barcelona como el CCCB (el centro de cultura contemporánea en Barcelona), el MACBA (el museo de arte contemporánea en Barcelona), el Instituto Francés y otros espacios.

Happy Halloween and All Saints Day.

Well it’s here!  Halloween has arrived!  This holiday is not celebrated to the same extent in Spain.  In Catalonia, the “Castañada”, traditionally celebrated on All Souls Day; is more centred on family coming together.  All Soul’s Day is one of the days on which the most flowers are sold, as many families visit the graves of their loved ones.  It is of such importance, that certain florists increase the prices of their flowers, which is something that their clients don’t like.

 

On this day, certain Catalan specialities are also consumed, for example, “castanyes” (chestnuts), “moniatos” (sweet potatoes), and “panellets” (small round marzipan cakes). “Moscatel” (sweet wine liquor) is also drunk on this day.

 

However if you are thinking more about the nightlife, fear not! You certainly won’t find any shortage of activities in Barcelona.

Nightclubs around the Catalonian capital will be full of people as they enjoy the festive atmosphere.  In certain clubs you will also have “fancy dress” nights for Halloween.

 

In Port Aventura, the well known amusement park outside Barcelona, you will also find a whole program of events, ranging from dinners, to hotel stays in a small and scary hotel to discovering their scary little village.

¡Ha llegado!  Me refiero a la Castañada. En Cataluña, el tradicional “Halloween” americano, se celebra de otra manera.  Esta Fiesta, que normalmente se celebra el día de Todos los Santos, está mucho más centrada en la familia. El día de todos los Santos es el día de todo el año en el que se vende las más flores, dado que mucha gente acude a los cementerios para visitar las sepulturas de sus seres queridos. Es de tanta importancia que algunos floristas suben los precios de sus flores durante este tiempo, algo que no gusta a sus clientes.

 

Normalmente la familia se junta para comer especialidades típicas de Cataluña como las “castanyes” (castañas), los “moniatos” (batatas) y los “panellets” (pastas dulces de mazapán y piñones).  En este día, también se bebe“Moscatel”, un licor dulce de vino.

 

Sin embargo, si está pensando más en la vida nocturna, ¡no se desespere!  No les faltarán  actividades en Barcelona.

Las discotecas en la capital de Cataluña estarán llenas de gente mientras disfruta el ambiente festivo.  En ciertas discotecas también habrá una fiesta de disfraces por Halloween.

 

En Port Aventura, el conocido parque de atracciones de Tarragona, encontrará un programa lleno de eventos, desde cenas hasta estancias en sus pequeños hoteles para “contactar con el miedo”.
